Pairing with a short code

/CMD-Note links a second device with a single-use code made on your

Pairing a second device in /CMD-Note used to go through a popup with a long link and a QR code. It worked, but it never felt like /CMD-Note. It was a screen full of things to open or scan, in an app where everything else is something you type.

So we replaced the link with a code you type. Run /sync pair on one device, then type the code on the other.

The code is made on your device, not by our server. Your device locks the pairing details before anything leaves it, so the server only ever holds something it can't read. The other device unlocks it with the code you typed.

Each code works once. Use it and it's gone. Leave it unused and it expires.

Sync stays optional. When it's on, it's end-to-end encrypted and keeps your devices matching. It isn't a backup. Your local notes are still the source of truth.

Shorter to type. Less for the server to know.
