/ZKR-Countr v2: less to count, more to remember
Version 2 does less than version 1, on purpose. Here's what we took out and why.
/ZKR-Countr is an older idea than /CMD-Note. It just took longer to become an app.
The first version came together quickly for a hackathon during Ramadan. The goal was to get the ideas down, so it took in nearly everything we could think of. It worked, but in day-to-day use a lot of it turned out to be things we never reached for, and it never looked the way we'd pictured it.
Most version twos add features. For v2 we went the other way and asked what a zikir app actually needs.
Zikir is remembrance, not a score
v1 counted how many times you'd finished a playlist. It let you skip back and forth between zikir and keep counting forever in infinite mode. When we thought back to how we actually used it, none of that helped. The point is to focus on the zikir itself, and keeping track of numbers pulls your attention the other way. We didn't want it to feel like a game or a scoreboard. This isn't Strava for zikir.
So v2 drops the play counter, the skip buttons and infinite mode. There are no streaks, stats or completion screens.
Back to the first sketch
v1 showed your progress with a ring that filled up. It added more clutter and information than the moment needs. v2 goes back to the original sketch for the app: a ring of beads that turns one step each time you tap, with a soft click you can mute.
What's left
Playlists, with the 7, 21, 33 and 100 presets one tap away. Each playlist keeps its own place, so you can switch lists or close the app and pick up where you stopped. When you reach a target it moves on to the next zikir quietly, and Undo can take back a reset.
Coming from v1
Your playlists come with you, Arabic text and notes included. Play counts and infinite mode don't.
It runs in your browser, works offline and needs no account.
